This month Tom Morgan brings his 'Organ Trio' to the town hall and features renowned pianist and musician Matt Ratcliffe. This type of ensemble typically consists of a Hammond Organ player, a Jazz Guitarist and a Drummer. It was popular in the 1950s and 1960s and was well known for its blues-based jazz combined with R&B elements.
The sounds of some of the great jazz guitarists such as Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell and George Benson can be heard within Morgan's smooth playing style and his performance is enhanced by a band of the finest calibre.
Matt Ratcliffe is a jazz pianist and composer based in the Derbyshire town of Wirksworth, he is well connected in the jazz music scene with links to the midland and national jazz scenes. Working with many of the best players in today’s contemporary jazz scene, Matt has forged his own unique and individual voice on the piano. He is also a teacher and an educator teaching jazz piano at Nottingham University and providing education projects through regional Arts organisation Derby Jazz.
Carl Hemmingsley is a drummer who is in high demand across the Midlands jazz scene. He combines rhythmic drive with great musical subtlety and has worked with Ruby Turner, Steve Tromans, John Dankworth, Julian Arguelles, Guy Barker and in his most recent visit to Birmingham, the great American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
This promises to be a high energy, engaging performance not to be missed!
