Charles Condomine is a successful author, currently looking for the subject of his next book. Interested in the recently popular science of ESP and the paranormal, Charles and his wife Ruth invite well-known psychic Madame Arcati to join them, along with their good friends the Bradman's, for a seance. All are expecting a fun evening with little to no psychic results, so it's quite a surprise when Madame Arcati successfully calls forth the spirit of Charles' first wife, Elvira, who only he can see. Now that she's returned, Elvira decides she wants her husband back and will do anything to make that happen...even if it means she has to kill him.
