Review your experience with Hellenic Art Theatre
The paintings anchored the production design of the show. The acting was great by the three key performers. The sound design was scratchy and poor. Congratulations for putting on the show.
Ticket purchase system could be improved by having each section directly moving in to the next.
Very good experience for a first time visit. Anywhere you sit is great for viewing… look forward to coming back.
A wonderful theatre that is small and with lots of character.
Easy to purchase tickets online however companion card not accepted. Prefer unallocated seating option & no popcorn available.
"A place like home", the small Theatre is carefully built with a thrust stage that allows a great view of the action. It contains archive posters of previous productions and simple snacks are available. It is not glamourous but it's comfortable and charming.
The Hellenic Art Theatre has a long history, and has made a great contribution to Greek theatre in Australia. This latest show, Karagiozis Live, proves it is still as good as it ever has been.
Very limited bar refreshments. No one at theatre entrance to check tickets or assist patrons with seating. Theatre is in need of TLC - furniture and decor looks and feels very dated. There was also an incident between 2 female patrons during intermission in which one of them ended up leaving and souring somewhat the event for everyone - there was no intervention or mediation by theatre management.
It was my first visit to the Hellenic Art Theatre. Loved the vibe and relaxed arty atmosphere.
Certainly old school and not very fancy but plenty of passion by all those involved with the Hellenic Art Theatre. If you attend one of their productions you will be keeping an eye out for what they have coming up next.
Just enjoy the shows
The Hellenic Art Theatre is a very special fixture that offers high quality stage theatre with compelling storylines, well executed production, and quality Players on stage. A night at Hellenic Theatre will 'tick every box' for a person who truly loves theatre and wants to see it done in the timeless traditions of live theatre. Where many theatres dilute their production values to appeal to modernity - The Hellenic Theatre holds the bar high.
This venue leaves a lot to be desired! This is NO reflection upon the theatrical organization but rather a comment on the apparent indifference by the owners/managers of this venue. For Greek theatre to survive in Sydney we need to attract the new generations and this needs to be accompanied by safe and clean surroundings as well as high artistic displays.

How did you like the event?
A powerful and authentic presentation of Kazantazakis' passionate work.
Enjoyed the play in this quaint theatre making it an intimate experience. Great that there are English subtitles for those that either don’t speak Greek or younger generation Aust/Greeks whose Greek may not be developed enough to completely understand the Greek dialogue. Bravo to Director Steve Economides for continuing to bring Greek Theatre to life after so many decades as tribute to his teacher & mentor Chrysostomos Mandouridis.
It was great and the costumes were awesome
Excellent performance. Thought provoking and captivating
The acting outstanding. The venue was perfect with old style comfortable leather seats. The play was superb and covered a moment in history that was impactful to the explores. It also addressed themes of the coming destruction of Indigenous population with sensitivity.
Great acting & production - I would have liked a bit more history in the play in addition to the rich dialogue. As a non-Greek speaker thanks for the clear surtitles
Long event with intermissions & poor music sound quality.

Karagiozis Live at the Opera House: The first viewing I saw the story: the second time I saw the complexity of the characters unfold as played expertly by the cast. It was a pleasure to talk to the cast and learn more about the songs and characters, and I am in awe of the production and writing team to successfully portray a complex figure like Karagiozis. I recommend all theatre lovers to "put your items on your hump" and see the shows produced at Hellenic Art Theatre.
A brilliant show! Great comedy, innovative yet true to the Karagiozis tradition. All performers were excellent. The surprise appearance by Elvis was a highlight. Live music and songs added an extra dimension.
I thought it was just hilarious. Had a really good time.
The English subtitles sometimes did not synchronise with the Greek being spoken by the actors and there were spelling / grammatical errors. It may also help to have a different colour for each subtitle
I thoroughly enjoyed this live production. Laughed so much I had tears running down my face.
I attended with my two adult children who I thought might have been reluctant to come along. We all had a great night and very much enjoyed the performance. We all appreciated the passion, effort and thought that went into this production. I encourage anyone who knows of the theatre to attend at least one performance, you will be pleasantly surprised. The Hellenic Art Theatre is a hidden treasure.
Karagiozis is an entertaining presentation that depends on the tradition of Karagiozis as a theatrical shadowy entertainment for youngish audiences over the past century that is then intermingled with the Greek migrants's Australian experiences. The poorly attended audience this evening did not do justice to the immense talent on the stage I would wholeheartedly recommend this experience for young and old to refresh old memories and create new experiences
Very Much
As a life long lover and informal researcher of classical Theatre techniques, I was taken on a journey of a lifetime to see "Karagiozis at the Opera House" produced by Hellenic Art Theatre and the genius of Stavros Economides. The minimal stage decor highlighted the electrifying performance of the cast who portrayed all the highs and lows of the human condition in bare face and masked character, within a production I will be sure to see twice.
Loved it!

Loved it
A classic funny play and great energy from the actors and play itself. Bravo
It.was an excellent production but a bite to long
the themes and actors are excellent I feel the low attendance is likely multi faceted in my subjective and non academic view the themes - norms and values about monies- inheritances male and female stereotypes - suspected infidelity prevail in most societies suicide-/ high education costs- refugees- detention - Gaza LGBQTI trans how much value does one place in attending a theatre in person ? how much does one ( of any age) prioritize themes
A very enjoyable display of good acting and a thoughtful script. I believe that the script needs to be "tightened" a little bit so as to avoid a degree of repetitiveness that was displayed. I think that, given the circumstances, the very energetic and knowledgeable cast did a fantastic job! One small, but important point for those that are not fully fluent in the nuances of the Greek language, is to ensure that the subtitles are visible in their entirety.
The theatre is easily accessible, with plenty of parking close to the venue. The cast was exceptional as always, the play had it's moments, I found it a little
