Before she became publisher of The Washington Post newspaper, Katharine Graham hid a terrifying secret. THE SHOT, steeped in history and politics, explores the surprising, devastating intricacies of resilience and love.
A Note from the Playwright, Robin Gerber . . .
The Shot grew from a nagging thought after I published a biography of Katharine Graham. I had interpreted the transformational moment of her husband's violent death as setting her free from his abuse. After that terrible event, she took over the newspaper and had a storied career as publisher. But the depth of our despair determines how much we struggle to recover, if we ever do. Had I been too glib about Katharine's emotional life after Phil's death? Many interviews with women who had lived through intimate partner violence, reading accounts of their suffering and studying the issue led me to realize how wrong I had been about the arc of Katharine's emergence as publisher. The Shot explores her joys and inner conflicts, her fear, confusion, remarkable determination and deep faith in love and duty. In all of these ways she is a composite of others who have endured, or are still enduring, domestic violence. I hope this play expands our understanding of those who are still suffering, and helps to end this scourge.
