Directed by Markus Imhoof
East Coast premiere | Switzerland, Germany | 2018 | 90 min. | German, French, Italian, Kurdish, Swiss German with subtitles

Drawing inspiration from his personal encounter with an Italian refugee child during World War II, director Markus Imhoof shows how refugees and migrants are treated today: on the Mediterranean Sea and in Italy and Switzerland. Winner of the Amnesty International Film Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Switzerland’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film.

shown with LIFEBOAT

Directed by Skye Fitzgerald

USA | 34 min. | 2018 | English, French, German, Hindi with subtitles

Volunteers from the German NGO Sea-Watch risk the waves of the Mediterranean to pluck refugees from sinking rafts pushing off from Libya. The film puts a human face on the current crisis and provides a spark of hope surrounding how civil society can intervene in the refugee crisis in a meaningful way. Nominated for a Best Documentary Short Oscar.

Speaker: Fred Mbuga, a refugee from Uganda who is currently lead case manager at the Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center.
