THE YELLOW WALLPAPER

A Workshop Production of a New Play by Jeff Davis

Adapted from the Short Story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

ABOUT THE PLAY

Based on the 1892 short story of the same name, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER tells the story of a young woman, Jane, as she grapples with a severe depression which her physician/husband, John, laughs off as a “slight hysterical tendency.”  Secluded in a small nursery and under her John’s domineering care, Jane slowly loses grip on her sanity, especially as she becomes increasingly obsessed with the room’s yellow wallpaper.  This Gothic-era psychological thriller is not to be missed.

WHAT IS A WORKSHOP PRODUCITION?

A Workshop Production is the staging of a work in process.  It allows the creative team a chance to test out material in front of a live audience and gives the audience an idea of what to expect from a fully-staged production.  While Agape plans on producing a fully-realized, World Premiere staging of The Yellow Wallpaper sometime in 2017, this one-night-only event is a Workshop Production of the current draft of the scrípt.  In this Workshop Production, the play will be performed by a cast of three talented performers in a staged reading format, meaning the actors will perform with scrípts in hand.  The performance will also employ the use of projections and sound effects, but there will be a lack of set, props, and costumes.  We ask that you come prepared to use your imagination.

POST-SHOW DISCUSSION AND FEEDBACK FORMS

Audience feedback is crucial to the success of a Workshop Production.  We want to know what you think of The Yellow Wallpaper, and your thoughts and feedback will be instrumental in helping us develop the scrípt before fully staging it in 2017.  As such, we encourage you to stay after the performance for a post-show discussion with the cast and playwright.  If you’d rather provide feedback anonymously, you will be able to do so via the feedback forms provided at every seat.

RUNNING TIME AND DISCLAIMERS

The Yellow Wallpaper runs approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including one intermission.  A post-show discussion with the cast and playwright will immediately follow the performance, and all audience members are invited to stay.

The Yellow Wallpaper features frightening sounds and images and language and situations that may not be suitable for audience members under the age of 13.  Parental discretion is advised.  Questions and concerns about contact can be sent to jeff.davis@agapetheatre.org or 512-88-STAGE.

FOR YOUR COMFORT

The seats in the Hewlett Room are not cushioned, so we suggest bringing a seat cushion or pillow with you.  If you don't have one, don't worry!  Seat cushions will be provided for all premium seats, and patrons sitting in complementary seats to the rear of the room may borrow seat cushions free of charge on a first come first served basis.
